“Students and Coaches Who Best Demonstrate Values of the Game Will be Awarded the Jr. NBA Tahir Foundation Scholarship”
JAKARTA, INDONESIA, May 7, 2015 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Tahir Foundation, a private charity organization that aims to help individuals and communities in need in the area of education and healthcare, announced today a multiyear partnership to launch the Jr. NBA Tahir Foundation Scholarship program for Indonesian youth and basketball coaches.
The announcement was made at a press conference at the Mayapada Hospital South Jakarta by NBA Asia Managing Director Scott Levy and Tahir Foundation co-chair Jonathan Tahir. To celebrate the announcement, the NBA and the Tahir Foundation conducted a basketball clinic for 60 boys and girls.
The Jr. NBA Tahir Foundation Scholarship program will be integrated into Jr. NBA Indonesia, the NBA’s global youth development program, and will provide financial scholarships to Indonesian students and special training for basketball coaches.
“We are delighted to partner with the NBA, a world class league, to invest in the future of this nation,” said Tahir. “We believe that focusing on education among the youth is key to a better life, and we look forward to helping young Indonesians achieve this through the Jr. NBA Tahir Foundation scholarship program.”
“We are honored to partner with the Tahir Foundation, an advocate for positive social change and an active contributor to the Indonesian community,” said Levy. “The Jr. NBA Tahir Foundation Scholarship, together with the NBA’s efforts to improve youth health and wellness through the Jr. NBA program, will enable us to positively impact young Indonesians and enrich their lives for years to come.”
20 participants from Jr. NBA Indonesia presented by Frisian Flag will be granted a scholarship valued at US $1,000 to support their education needs. Participants can enter by submitting a 150-word essay outlining how they best exhibit at least one of the Jr. NBA core values of sportsmanship, teamwork, positive attitude, and respect (S.T.A.R.). Winners will be selected by a panel of judges from both the NBA and Tahir Foundation. Winning entries will be judged based on each participant’s original writing, commitment to the S.T.A.R. values, and the impact they have on the people and community around them.
Five coaches will be awarded coaching scholarships based on their commitment to basketball development and their impact on the community through coaching. The five coaches will be rewarded with a unique NBA coaching experience trip.
